I am studying philosophy in my spare time. I have found certain schools of ancient Greek philosophy to be relevant to daily living in the 21st century. I have found Stoicism to be particularly relevant in facing life's adversity in a brave, rational and compassionate manner.....

I first encountered Stoicism in my university's library copy of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. I heard of this emperor from world history class and that he was some kind of philosopher. Bored, I checked it out. I was not bored long! I was enthralled with the work and stayed up all night reading it. What I enjoyed most was the emphasis on the primacy of reason in guiding one's life.

I was reading "Meditations" and this book opened my mind and now I am coming to the realisation that I have been to some degree living in a Stoic fashion even if I was lacking some basics that I am working on. The pursuit of tranquility and our duty as men is very important to me.
